Anandwan aimed to empower leprosy-affected individuals by providing them with medical care, vocational training, and a supportive community. In 1951, Baba Amte founded Anandwan, a unique rehabilitation and training center for leprosy patients, situated in the forests of Maharashtra. This transformative experience prompted him to abandon his lucrative legal career and dedicate himself to the service of the marginalized. Witnessing their immense suffering and the stigma they faced awakened a deep sense of empathy and compassion within him. However, his encounter with a group of people affected by leprosy would alter the course of his life forever. Legal Career and AwakeningĪfter completing his education in law, Baba Amte embarked on a career as a successful barrister. Despite his comfortable upbringing, Baba Amte was deeply disturbed by the poverty and social inequalities around him, which sparked a lifelong quest to bring about meaningful change. His father, Devidas Amte, was a British government official, and his mother, Laxmibai, hailed from a well-respected family.
